Subtleroyalty Rosie and I are extending an invitation to In The Midst the first in a series of meditations on movement. Made by Kobusinge Liz Kobusinge and Darlyne Komukama during a residency in LAPA in Johannesburg (2022), this work has traveled across time and space, and it arrives here, in Kampala, at exactly the right amount. In The Midst carries with it the soot of my favorite form of movement: dance. It is experiential; you have to feel: and move through it. "We started out wanting to print sound and made literal representations of the Black Circles that always hold us and list us in community. As a part of our experiment, we laid some prepared brass plates on the floor of our residency apartment and had friends dance on them, making impressions that we printed onto the bark cloth and lint paper we made in the studio."
